A lot of people don’t realize it is time to repair or replace their roof until the bad weather comes and there’s a significant leak. Sure, a leaky roof is an indicator of the need for a roof replacement but there are many other tell tale signs that come long before a leak and can be less damaging when paid attention to.
Curled Shingles – When new shingles are installed, they lay flat on the roof but as the asphalt shingles age, they can dry out, become brittle and begin to curl. Curling shingles are a potential sign of an impending leak. If only a couple of shingles are curled, you may be able to replace them, however, if multiple shingles are curling randomly across the roof, it may be time to replace the entire roof.
Roof Life – Most traditional asphalt shingles last between 20 – 25 years which means that by the time your roof is approximately 20 years, you would have used most of its life. At that point, a roof replacement is usually needed or if not, regular maintenance is advised in order to keep an eye on it. At Warner Roofing we offer a variety of shingles including Owens Corning shingles and Bayview aluminum shingles. If you’re worried about the cost of a metal roof, we also offer affordable financing options.
Cracked or missing shingles – Cracked or missing shingles are often caused by heavy winds. It is possible to replace one or two missing shingles but consistently missing or cracked shingles means that it is time to start considering a total roof replacement.
Light in the attic – Taking a look in your attic can help make your roof investigation a little easier. Climb in there and check for any sign of light or sun rays peeking in through the roof. This means there are holes and could result in your roof leaking. Looking in the attic can also reveal signs of water damage on the walls.
Moss on the roof – Moss/algae forms when there is a lot of moisture being absorbed in a place. Once you see this forming on any part of your roof, it is important to look into it. Sometimes, it could be surface moss that can be washed off the roof, but if often signals a more significant damage. If the moss is all around the roof, it is probably time to consider changing the roof. Even though the leaks have not begun, the integrity of the shingles are most likely compromised and will soon need to be replaced.
Monitoring your roof regularly is important to ensure that you don’t have a sudden downpour coming into your house. Also, a damaged roof can lead to structural damage which is a much larger problem. In need of roof repair or a roof replacement? Call Warner Roofing today! or get a quote .
